Influence of Preconditioned Stratospheric State on the Surface Response to Displacement and Split Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

چکیده

Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) can affect tropospheric weather and climate, while the factors affecting surface response to SSWs are not fully understood. This study shows important effects of preconditioned state on displacement split using ERA5 reanalysis historical simulations from 12 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) models. Both CMIP6 models show that signals (e.g., positive meridional potential vorticity gradient anomaly in upper stratosphere) promote upward propagation planetary waves by decreasing negative refractive index frequency before SSWs. The modulation strong preconditions causes larger upper-stratospheric anomalies for subsequent prominent barotropic downward impacts Meanwhile, preexisting variability, masking is thus weaker than with weak preconditions.

Do split and displacement sudden stratospheric warmings have different annular mode signatures?

Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) contribute to intraseasonal tropospheric forecasting skill due to their surface impacts. Recent studies suggest these impacts depend upon whether the polar vortex splits or is displaced during the SSW. We analyze the annular mode signatures of SSWs in a 1000 year IPSL-CM5A-LR simulation. Although small differences in the mean surface Northern Annular Mode (N...

NorthernHemispheremid-winter vortex-displacement and vortex-split stratospheric sudden warmings: Influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation

We investigate the connection between the equatorial Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and different types of the Northern Hemisphere mid-winter major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), i.e., vortex-displacement and vortex-split SSWs. The MJO-SSW relationship for vortex-split SSWs is stronger than that for vortex-displacement SSWs, as a result of the stronger and more coherent eastward propaga...

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings as Noise-Induced Transitions

Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are usually considered to be initiated by planetary wave activity. Here it is asked whether small-scale variability (e.g., related to gravity waves) can lead to SSWs given a certain amount of planetary wave activity that is by itself not sufficient to cause a SSW. A highly vertically truncated version of the Holton–Mass model of stratospheric wave–mean flow ...

On the Relationship between ENSO, Stratospheric Sudden Warmings, and Blocking

This paper examines the influence of El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on different aspects of major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), focusing on the precursor role of blocking events. The results reveal an ENSO modulation of the blocking precursors of SSWs. European and Atlantic blocks tend to precede SSWs during El Ni~ no (EN), whereas eastern Pacific and Siberian blocks are the pref...

The Life Cycle of the Northern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Motivated by recent evidence of strong stratospheric–tropospheric coupling during the Northern Hemisphere winter, this study examines the evolution of the atmospheric flow and wave fluxes at levels throughout the stratosphere and troposphere during the composite life cycle of a sudden stratospheric warming. The composite comprises 39 major and minor warming events using 44 years of NCEP–NCAR re...
